BAMMA have been forced to cancel their fifth event which was scheduled to take place this weekend in Newcastle, at the Metro Radio Arena.
Top UK heavyweight Stav Economou was all set to take on former Pride FC and K-1 fighter Bob Sapp, who suffered a TKO loss in Sweden this past weekend. There were many other great bouts on the bill including Sinclair vs. Pastor, Phillips vs. Kuipers and Petrescu vs. Makhonin. It is uncertain whether any of these bouts will be able to be saved on other promotions at the moment, as both OMMAC and Ultimate Challenge have big cards this weekend.
BAMMA are citing the current snowy conditions in the North of England as the factor, and the official line from the company is:
Following an extensive risk assessment, which has highlighted large public safety and logistical risks, we have decided to take heed of the advice that we have been given. After weighing up all of the potential risks, as undesirable as it is, we feel we have no option but to cancel the event,”.
“If we continue with the event as scheduled we will be unable to offer refunds to any of our fans that have purchased tickets and are unable to attend the event due to the extreme weather conditions. In this case, we will be forcing ticket buyers from across the country to make a potentially treacherous journey to Newcastle or forfeit the money that they have spent. After being informed by the Met office that the extreme weather will remain as it is for the foreseeable future, we are simply not prepared to put ticket buyers for BAMMA 5 in this position. Therefore, we are taking the exceptionally hard decision to cancel the event, ensure all fans receive a full refund and look ahead to our next huge event. We hope that we have reduced the negative implications of this decision by making it at an early stage.
Whilst we always attempt to ensure that all we have all bases covered when it comes to a BAMMA event, extreme weather is something that is simply out of our control – something that I have witnessed first hand having been in Newcastle for the weekend. We would like to apologise to all ticket buyers to BAMMA 5 for the inconvenience caused by this decision and hope that they will understand our reasons for cancelling the event and join us for the next epic BAMMA event.”
Stay tuned to Your MMA for more details as they emerge, and for the reactions to the fallout. It hasn’t been note whether some of the bouts will be postponed, but the news will be here as we get it.
